Mattheus E. Stephens is a partner in the
San Diego law firm Stock Stephens, LLP.
In addition to being a Lecturer at the
University of California, San Diego, Matt
specializes in general civil litigation and has
handled a wide range of cases involving
business disputes, employment issues,
Civil Rights claims, intellectual property and
real property disputes, and unregistered
domestic partner dissolutions. Matt is
currently litigating a case against the Boy
Scouts of America to terminate their long-
term public parkland leases with the City of San Diego.

Matt earned his Juris Doctorate degree from Rutgers University School of Law, Camden, in 1990 and started his law career at Gray Cary Ames & Frye (now DLA Piper Rudnick) as a commercial litigation associate. Matt now combines the practice of law with community service work, which includes being a founding member and former Co-President of the Tom Homann Law Association, San Diego’s Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Bar Association. Matt is a Champion of Pride, winner of the Gloria Steinem Communications Award and the SDCBA Community Service Award.  He is a founding member of the Public Policy Department and former member of the Board of Directors of the LGBT Community Center, and a former member of the ACLU Board of Directors for San Diego and Imperial Counties; a former Chair of the City of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission; and, currently serves as a Pro Tem Judge in Small Claims Court. This year the Daily Transcript voted Mattheus a San Diego County Top Attorney for 2008, and he was recently appointed to the city’s Civil Service Commission.
